United States

The U.S. has the largest and most widely served system of higher education in the world. The system consists of public universities, private colleges and universities, two-year colleges, and community colleges.

Public Universities: Are state and locally supported through tuition and taxes, Most public universities are considered mid-range to large in terms of physical size and enrollment. Two of the largest state university systems are located in New York and California. Many “state” universities require a state residency for application or entry. Most public universities are comprehensive and offer degrees in many disciplines. Public universities are often less expensive to attend and may have less competitive entry requirements for residents of that state.

Private Colleges and Universities: As opposed to public universities, most colleges and universities in the United States are considered small and private. According to NCES, there are over 5,000 colleges and universities in the U.S., and over 4,000 are considered residential.
